In 2015, 85% of Cincinnati families with children living at or below the poverty line were from homes led by single mothers. People's Liberty Project Grantee Nicole Lee launched Warrior Moms to help change that statistic. Warrior Moms is a mobile beauty salon, series of makeovers and supportive events that aim to empower and create a positive network of single mothers. Warrior Moms is founded on the premise that single mothers are unrecognized warriors that deserve to be celebrated for their strength. Read on to learn about Nicole’s journey with Warrior Moms.
What stage is your project in currently?
The Warrior Moms® Project is in the Pre-Launch stage. April 8th, we will reveal and celebrate the winners of the Warrior Moms makeover contest. I am in the final stages of choosing one single mother from the communities of Avondale, North College Hill and Price Hill. The contest ends March 31st.
What’s the motivation behind Warrior Moms?
Cincinnati has one of the highest per capita rates of poverty and rank one of the highest for rate of infant mortality. Avondale, North College Hill and Price Hill are three of the many communities within Cincinnati that are affected by this hardship. Single Mothers are among the most who live in this hardship. I am a single mother who knows firsthand the challenges and victories that we face. This represents a driving motivation behind the concept of Warrior Moms.
What goes into empowering mothers?
The Warrior Moms Project mission is to empower single mothers by offering them tools that will assist in igniting their greatness. For their children to become great citizens of society, greatness must exude thru the caregiver. A child must see what greatness looks like in order to become great.
This project will create a platform so that the mothers can empower self—through meditation, vision boards, financial freedom strategies, positive affirmations and awakening the creativity from within—when you activate creativity, great ideas are produced.
The mission is to awaken from within their God given talents and abilities that will assist them with creating a brighter future for their family. This will be offered at the Warrior Moms Survival Kit Workshop May 6th. An invitation will be extended to all applicants.
How does your personal story affect your project?
I am a single mother. I know the struggles. This project adds to my journey as a Warrior Mom myself. There have been many sacrifices to “say yes” to this project! When Aurore called, and said I was chosen as one of the eight grantees, I had to decide right then: Choose a career as an Educator at a Beauty Institute while I poured my successes of the hair and beauty industry to upcoming cosmetology students or Trust the success to create a platform to empower single mothers by utilizing my knowledge, experiences and gifts during my 20-year career as a “Healing Cosmetologist” and Salon Owner? Choose or Trust? I chose to TRUST!
The choice was a no brainer. Both paths would be rewarding, but the possibilities with Warrior Moms are endless. I can build and stand on this platform, and have my children see what greatness looks like!
What’s been the most memorable moment thus far?
Mmm, let’s see, there are so many, but the most memorable moment is when my graphic designer added the visuals to the Warrior Moms logo. This is the moment Warrior Moms became a reality to me. Also, I'm most grateful for an awesome, gifted and loving team: People's Liberty Team and The Warrior Moms Core Team. Without them, Warrior Moms wouldn't exist. This is my greatest memorable moment—loving support!
What’s your version of success for Warrior Moms?
Success is measured when everyone connected to the Warrior Moms Project, including the winners, recognize the need and agree with action to celebrate Motherhood! Mothers are the main source to life here on Earth. We are the only species that can bring forth life and exude unconditional love, that this world so desperately needs of right now. Birthing a child brings forth a new awareness of how precious life truly is and how influential mothers are to our future. Mothers need to be celebrated daily not just once a year—EVERYDAY!
What’s next for Warrior Moms?
There will be four Warrior Moms upcoming events as follows:
April 8th—The Celebratory Launch Celebration
May 6th—The Survival Kit Workshop
June 17th—The Makeover Photoshoot Event
September 24th—The Finale- Photo Galley and Documentary
There are so many ideas and so many directions this project can go, yet I’m staying true to the vision. During this journey, I’m putting forth my energy into the things that I’ve invested the most: The Warrior Moms website and the documentary creation of the Warrior Moms journey. The website will become an ECommerce site for all contestant whose creativity has awaken with a great idea, product or service. The documentary will be utilized as a tool to empower the communities represented. There will also be a step-by-step published book to share the journey of the Warrior Moms Project with People’s Liberty past and future grantees and other philanthropic organizations. Lastly, I’ve been asked from organizations to continue this mission throughout other high infant mortality rate neighborhoods. This could be a possibility with aid of sponsors. Being a grant recipient ignites a desire to become philanthropic. Having the ability to give back to your community, to your city is such a refreshing experience—it truly defines your reason of being.
Any last thing you want people to know?
The Warrior Moms project is founded on the premise that single mothers are unrecognized warriors that deserve to be celebrated for their strength. The Warrior Mom’s goal is to awaken the warrior spirit from within, so that the single mother may continue the works of raising our future leaders of the world; eliminate the pride from within, so that they may be open to receive help and to remind them of their power as a mother. Mothers have the power to feed into their children expanded powers that dwells within their Spirit. Mothers have the power to pour into their children when their spirit is in need of light.
