The Mini Microcinema Opening

Lights, camera, action! People's Liberty and 2015 Globe Grantee C. Jacqueline Wood celebrate the successful launch of The Mini Microcinema. This project is dedicated to showcasing experimental film/video/media produced outside of Hollywood's mainstream, challenging conventional standards of form and content. The initial screening titled "This Is What We Are Doing" was curated by Jacqueline herself and demonstrated a broad range of experimental media. Couldn't make it to opening night? We've recorded some highlights below:

During the premiere, the works of Liz Cambron, Duke & Battersby, Matt McCormick, Bill Morrison, Shirin Mozafarri, Frank Pahl and Terri Sarris, and Nora Sweeney were shown.

The storefront gallery (1805 Elm Street) is devoted to sharing the history of experimental film, as well as showcasing individual projects from other artists and filmmakers. This first installation, titled "an exercise in vulnerability," was created by Jesse Byerly and explores the slightly awkward task of holding a single note for as long as possible. Participants interpret this prompt in various ways which makes for an interesting audio/visual experience as viewers don headphones to bring the exercise to life.

The Mini Microcinema features a variety of work created by filmmakers and artists from around the country. Accompanying movie posters designed by a number of Cincinnati-based artists hint toward the stylistic elements offered in each piece. (Thanks to Justin Lunsford, Peter Van Hyning, Lizzy Duquette, Michael Fischer & Emily Verba Fischer, Antonio Adams, Leah Busch, Jesse Byerly, Michael Hurst, Hayes Shanesy, and Jillian Clearly for contributing poster art).

What movie theater would be complete without food and drinks? Our audience members enjoyed complimentary beverages from Rhinegesit Brewery and tasty treats from the Sleepy Bee Café.
A big thank you goes out to these local business for their on-going support of The Mini Microcinema.

Like what you see? The People's Liberty gallery transforms three times yearly to showcase provocative installations and pop-up experiences created by local artists, designers and other creatives. PL will provide installation assistance, basic tools, lighting, technical equipment and administrative support as needed. Visit peoplesliberty.org/apply to download Grant Guide and apply!
